In the world of natural health foods and drinks, few, if any, come close to having as many health giving benefits as this kind of tea. Botanical evidence has long shown the properties of tea as having both medicinal and health tonic benefits and have spawned not just western but global health trends thanks to the tea-drinking heritage from India and China. Green tea is a type of tea preparation from the unfermented leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant species. The main benefit of green tea hinges on its having the highest concentrations of antioxidants and polyphenols among other tea types (black and oolong teas). These substances make it work two ways. This is also why the idea of green tea and weight loss can be linked together. First, its antioxidants prevent cellular damage of tissues caused by free radicals that accumulate with age and environmental pollution. This property gives green tea its multiple testimonial and documentary health benefits against some types of cancers, liver disease, diabetes and atherosclerosis.
Second, its abundant content of catechins polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is a powerful anti-oxidant, is known to lower LFL cholesterol levels. That’s when despite consuming fat-rich diets, the French have lower incidence of heart disease, living longer lives than Americans who consume about the same high fat diets.
But because of red wine commonly taken by the French with their meals, the polyphenol Resveratrol in the wine reduces the cholesterol linked to heart disease. A 1997 study at the University of Kansas have revealed that EGCG in green tea is twice more potent than Resveratrol in red wines. Here is where its famous weight reducing qualities have taken off. Clinical studies have further demonstrated its ability to boost metabolism and burn fat. One such study has shown that its EGCG along with its minimal caffeine content accounts for its improved weight loss and weight maintenance effects in moderately obese people.
As far as side effects are concerned, green tea is safe. As a result, you should consider the idea of green tea and weight loss. In fact, about the only unwanted side effect is insomnia which is more the result of caffeine in the tea preparation itself. But it only contains 60mg in 8 ounces compared with over 100mg of caffeine in coffee of the same amount.
